CommUNITY Barnet is backing a project called the Flower Bank, which is currently fundraising for a project through Spacehive and needs your help.
The Mayor of London funded this project by £30,000 and cited this as an innovative and enterprising response to recycling and engagement. This project aims to renovate 2 dilapidated shops in N11 and transform them into a community florist and learning centre and in addition to the Mayor of London’s pledge, we have received backing from Friern Barnet Educational Trust and Barnet Council.
This project ticks so many boxes including:
- reducing waste
- reducing social isolation
- improving community cohesion
- bringing an empty shop back into use to help revitalise the High Street.
- providing training for ex-offenders that want to turn their life around and get on a career path.
- providing day and evening classes
- sale of seasonally grown produce
- community help desk providing gardening and growing tips
Currently, there are only 8 days left to secure the remaining monies of £15,000, unless the target is met all pledges will be cancelled. Currently, this project has raised an incredible £53,000 of its £68,000 target. We are 77% funded but need a push to get us to the final target.
We have had amazing responses so far from our local community and businesses including a recent meeting with a flower contractor for banks and business in the city and Canary Wharf who have agreed to send their flowers once they have finished being on display. Locally Aldi has also signed up to our flower recycling project.
The flowers end up in arrangements for old people’s homes, dementia wards and as funeral wreaths for those on a low income. We have also set up a community garden in Haringey and are starting to reap the rewards of being able to add our own flowers.
The Flower Bank a social enterprise operating in the London boroughs of Barnet and Haringey
