History of the Muswell Hill Odeon (now Everyman) – 8th November, 7.30pm at North Bank, Muswell Hill Methodist Church (28 Pages Lane)
The Odeon Cinema in Fortis Green Road opened on 9th September 1936, and is
a celebrated, Grade II* listed art-deco building. Jeremy Buck, author of the book “Cinemas of Haringey”, will describe its eventful history, from its controversial opening, through the boom years of the 1930s and 40s, the threat of closure in the 1980s and its rebirth as the Everyman. Fully illustrated with a selection of images and the Paramount Newsreel of the opening night. Everyone is welcome to come along, and there is no need to book in advance.
Possible changes to the 134 bus service
At the end of September, TFL announced that they wish to consult the public on possible changes to bus services in Central London. Under the proposed changes, the 134 bus route would terminate at Warren Street (University College Hospital) rather than at Tottenham Court Road. If you would be affected by this, please give TFL your views. The consultation form is available online at:
or you can send an email to [email protected] with your concerns. Alternatively you can write to TFL at their postal address, which is simply FREEPOST TFL CONSULTATIONS. The deadline for submitting a response is 9th November.
Muswell Hill Delivery Office under threat of closure
Royal Mail is currently consulting its staff over plans to close the Muswell Hill Delivery Office. If this goes ahead, the new arrangement would be that customers would need to travel to Wood Green to drop off and collect items instead. Unfortunately this would likely have an adverse impact on both small businesses and residents with mobility problems in the area. Royal Mail have commented that any changes would help to increase the efficiency of their operations, and that they are in contact with our local MP, Catherine West, about the issue.
A Very Merry Muswell!
With Christmas looming, MHFGA would like to invite all readers to ‘A Very Merry Muswell’, the festival celebrating the switching-on of the lights around the Muswell Hill Christmas Tree. The event is being held this year on Saturday 1st December from 2-5pm, in St James’s Square (outside Planet Organic). MHFGA will have a stall at the event, and we would love to see you, so please come by to say hello! If you would like to donate any items to our Charity Tombola, please get in touch with us as soon as possible by emailing [email protected]
MHFGA is your local residents’ association (since 1948!) We produce six bi-monthly Newsletters per year, which are distributed to over 750 members. Membership for households is just £10 per year and gives you the chance to attend our special events, such as our recent guided tour of Highgate Cemetery. Each summer we hold the popular ‘Odd One Out’ competition, and last Christmas we raised over £460 with our Charity Tombola.
