MHFGA Members’ Meetings – going from strength to strength!
On 11th October, we held our latest Members’ Meeting with renowned speaker Michael Burman, who gave us a fascinating talk on the history of the Northern Line. We had a record attendance at that meeting – over 75 people attended! If you missed out, why not join the Association today? You will be given advance notice of all our Members’ Meetings, our Annual Walk, our Christmas Tombola and of course the famous Odd One Out competition.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 8th November, 7.30pm at North Bank (28 Pages Lane). Cinema historian Jeremy Buck will be giving a talk about the history of the Muswell Hill Odeon (now Everyman). Please join us if you can – the talk is free of charge for everyone.
Christmas Tombola – can you help us raise money for charity?
We are very excited about the upcoming Muswell Hill Christmas festival – ‘A Very Merry Muswell’. The event is being held this year on Saturday 1st December from 2-5pm, in St James’s Square (outside Planet Organic), and the Christmas lights will be switched on at 4pm.
One of the main events will be our Charity Tombola. Last year we raised over £460 for the Muswell Hill Soup Kitchen, and this year our chosen charity is Muswell Hill-based WAVE. But we cannot do this without the generosity of local residents and businesses. If you are able to donate any items to our Charity Tombola, please get in touch with us as soon as possible by emailing us at [email protected] – thank you!
The possible major development at 1-9 Fortis Green Road
Many local residents will be aware of the recent planning application to undertake a major development at 1-9 Fortis Green Road, currently the site of the Flower Seller, La Dinette, Amici Miei and Misk Boutique. This attracted a significant number of objections from local residents and businesses. In response, the MHFGA stepped in to suggest a public meeting should take place, where the developers could discuss their plans with residents to find out more about their concerns. This meeting took place on 21st October.
The plans are being revised to take the feedback of local residents into account, and a new application will be submitted. The six new flats to be built will be for rent rather than for sale, and existing commercial tenants will be given first refusal of the new shop units, once built.
New Corporate Members!
Several new businesses decided to support us this month – Muswell Hill Picture Framers, Sable D’Or, 11.04 Architects, Husen Moda and Woolyland have all joined. If you know of a business who would like to get involved with the work that MHFGA does, please contact us at [email protected] – we are incredibly proud of our strong local business community.
MHFGA is your local residents’ association (since 1948!) We produce six bi-monthly Newsletters per year, which are distributed to over 750 members. Membership for households is just £10 per year and gives you the chance to attend our special events, such as our recent guided tour of Highgate Cemetery. Each summer we hold the popular ‘Odd One Out’ competition, and last Christmas we raised over £460 with our Charity Tombola.
