St James Church Community Café

yellow mug with a teabag the string of which is overlapping the cup ending with a heart shaped piece of paper

Community Café was launched in 2009, 8 years ago, with the idea of being a community hub in Muswell Hill to welcome people.  The aim was for St. James to open its doors to everyone!  Hannah Whitehead was appointed Head of Community Ministries and has been looking after Community Café since August 2016.  She has forged partnerships with Planet Organic, Marks and Spencer and Sainsbury’s.  The church offers work experience for those with learning difficulties through Action For Kids charity (which they have been awarded the “On The Up” award for being an inclusive partner), Treehouse School and Ambitious College for those with Autism, Haringey Council and Barnet Council.

It is a joy and a privilege to be involved with all the people of all ages each Tuesday morning and to befriend those people who are in need of this.  The pleasure in seeing the people of all ages working behind the table which are laden with baked goods of all types, serving tea and coffee and most of all, always smiling and finding it a joy to assist with this table, is immeasurable.

There is also a time for a group prayer at the beginning of the morning and then a prayer from Michael and also a ‘quiz’ event for everyone to participate in.  Each week I stay longer and longer as I feel so at home.  This is the most special of places and spaces and welcome to all.  After all of these activities then lunch is served which was just made and prepared by these young people and always it is a healthy and delicious lunch, usually, soup or pasta with side dishes.  It is enjoyed by all!
