Raising The Stakes

The Victoria StakesThe once former stables, used by the horses that would take the carriages up Muswell Hill, is now a well-established gastro pub in Crouch End, whose name originates from the name of a famous horse race at the old Alexandra Palace course, is now undergoing its next and very exciting part of its development, under the guidance of its new ownership.

With rumours of new menus, prohibition themed cocktail nights, comedy and refurbishments, we were curious, so we sought out the new owners to hear about the exciting details, straight from the horse’s mouth.

Lucy (former fashion show producer, director of London based Events company, N8 Resident) – When I first moved to the area with my partner Ben and two sons, we always felt a connection with the local vibe and in fact we had our first Sunday Roast in the Dining Rooms at The Stakes.  When we heard that Vicky was on the market due to the previous owner moving back to Australia, we knew it was the right thing to do. There is something special about the place.  As well as a great pub, dining room and courtyard it is a stunning venue.  We are incredibly excited about extending ourselves more into the community and having the opportunity to give back to Crouch End.

Marc (Lucy’s Brother, Senior project manager for sporting events internationally and a dab hand in the kitchen) – Being given the keys in December we certainly had to hit the ground running, but we all got stuck in.  We have lots of ideas for the venue, however it takes time and most importantly we want to listen to our customers and act on their feedback. We want to give the love and care to the Stakes it deserves especially the food and service.  We are a family business and that extends to our staff and we hope that will come across in our service to customers.

Ben (Former Matterhorn Capital Operations Manager & Director of Hospitality Consultancy WLB ) Firstly as mentioned by Marc, we must listen to our customers and it is very exciting time for food and drink.  We would like to be at the forefront of both!  We are keen to become renowned for putting on fantastic eventsWe have just launched a quality regular comedy night and plans are afoot for plenty of bespoke events, such as the Fawlty Towers Dining Experience, coming up in May. It promises to be an unforgettable evening, as our Dining Room is taken over by Basil, Manuel and co for one night only!

Victoria Stakes menuThe Victoria Stakes is a very special place for myself and Lucy, and we hope to help give others that experience too. We have three fantastic spaces and it is always exciting to help our clients create their bespoke events.

 

CEC – You live in the area, do you try and keep things local?

Lucy – There is a great community feel in the area, we strive to use local produce as much as possible and love supporting local business. As well as stocking quality real ales from the counties, we are always looking to support local breweries in Haringey & Hackney.  We have just introduced serving the Crouch End Blend from My Kind of Coffee, our popular cheeses are supplied by Philip at Wildes Cheese who is a well-loved face at the Ally Pally Farmer’s Market.  We will also always be looking for any entertainment to be supplied by bands from the area and anyone who has a community project should just ask for me and we would love to help.

 

CEC – Finally, what is driving you on? Any ambitions?

Marc – We overheard someone leaving the Stakes, saying how much they loved the place, it doesn’t get much better than that.
