Valerie Richards, an 81 year old former social worker, and David Richards, an 83 year old former teacher, were looking to downsize from their 1930s four bedroom home in Highbury and felt the natural step would be to return to Muswell Hill, where they lived for 20 years until their children flew the nest.
They wanted a newly built home, which needed very little work or maintenance, to better meet their needs as they grow older, but found the prospect of moving to a retirement village unappealing. Instead they turned their attention to housebuilder Hill’s and, retirement housing provider, Hanover’s Woodside Square development in Muswell Hill, primarily aimed at over-55s. “What really attracted us to Woodside Square was the lovely garden outlook, concierge service, and like-minded neighbours. We wanted to live somewhere that was familiar and you cannot get any more familiar than just around the corner from where our children grow up. This development in Muswell Hill really ticked all the boxes for us”, says Valerie.
“We love the area and its close proximity to Hampstead Heath. During my college years my cross country team would run across the heath and so my love for the open green spaces and tranquil atmosphere really blossomed then”, adds David.
Mr and Mrs Richards have purchased a three bedroom penthouse Garden Apartment at Hill’s and Hanover’s development, which overlooks the landscaped central square and features bright and spacious interiors and a large south-facing roof terrace.
Valerie comments: “I have always been a keen gardener so having space outside was definitely on my check-list. After having such a lovely garden at our previous home, we wouldn’t have wanted to move to an apartment without at least a balcony. We are thrilled with the outside space available at our new home and the opportunity we have to add our own special touches.
“Learning that the garden square, which our terrace overlooks, will also be home to native mature trees and wild flowers is fantastic and we can’t wait to spend time there getting to know our neighbours.”
The Woodside Square development is built on the former site of the historic St. Luke’s Hospital. These include the Heritage Apartments, which will be converted from the Grade II listed Neo-Georgian administration building and two locally listed Victorian houses into spacious, contemporary apartments.
The Garden Apartments at Woodside Square are now 50% sold, with prices starting at £585,000 for a one bedroom apartment up to £1,300,000 for a three bedroom apartment.
On the west side of the development, the Woodside Grove apartments, duplexes and townhouses are also available from £580,000 for a one bedroom to £1,099,950 for a three bedroom apartment.
Work is currently underway at the site and the first residents moved in this spring. The development is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
