Bike Maintenance Tips from Bike and Run
Bike Maintenance Tips. A few simple, quick and easy ways to keep your bike in good shape will keep it working better and save you money. Components will last longer and there will be fewer trips to the local bike shop.
Clean your bike regularly, especially after wet rides.
A bucket of soapy water and a dish wash brush will help prevent salt corrosion taking its course. Consider trying out bike-specific cleaners and degreasers which are guaranteed safe to use on your pride and joy, are biodegradable, water soluble and easy to use. Spray the bike cleaner on to the bike, give it a light scrub, then rinse the cleaner off with fresh water. Fast and simple.
Once cleaned, keeping the moving parts such as the chain and gear change mechanisms lubed is the next most important step.
Use a specific chain lube for the chain but use sparingly as too much oil will attract road grit and dirt and accelerate wear. Other moving components like the derailleurs can be kept lubed with a light spray oil but always be careful not to get the oil on the wheel rims or brake pads for obvious reasons.
Keep your tyres inflated to the correct pressure as this will reduce punctures, be safer and you will go faster. All tyres have the recommended tyre pressure shown on the tyre sidewall. If you are a regular cyclist a good track pump is essential.
