For some of us life is so busy, we hardly ever find time to stop to think beyond what’s next on the “to do” list. For others, life may have settled in to a slower or different pattern but there is always something to occupy our thoughts or divert us from thinking beyond the immediate.
That said, most of us have, at some time in our lives, pondered those Big Questions, the questions of life….Why am I here? What’s it all about? Is there anyone out there? However important these questions are, when set in the context of our ordinary lives, they can seem too big to tackle, or even too hot to handle – quite frankly it’s easier to ignore them and to get on with our lives. So we do just that, sailing along until they pop into our minds again….
The Alpha Course is run all over the world and is offered on the basis that no question asked is too big or too small, too insignificant or too “out there”. It’s a course designed for those who have questions, questions about life, faith, church or are just curious.
Alpha courses run in churches, bars, coffee shops and homes all around the globe. This month we’re running a new course at St James every Tuesday evening for ten weeks from 8 October to 10 December. The course has just started but it’s not too late to sign up! A typical evening includes food, a short talk and a discussion at the end where you can share your thoughts. The talks are designed to encourage debate and explore the basics of the Christian faith in a friendly, honest and informal environment.
Twenty two and a half million people have already done the Alpha course worldwide. It’s fun, relaxed and totally no pressure. If you’re ready to start asking questions we’d love to see you at Alpha. To sign up for the course, contact [email protected], or drop into the church bookshop for more details.

We are delighted that Stuart Townend is coming to perform again at St James on Friday 18 October at 7.30pm. Stuart is one of today’s leading worship songwriters and his hymns and songs are sung in churches around the world.
The evening will be one of worship and performance, made up of a mixture of his latest songs and older well-known classics. It will be fairly informal and is designed for people of all ages, musical tastes and backgrounds. Tickets are £10 (£5 for concessions) available from the church bookshop or online at www.st-james.org.uk. All proceeds from the evening will go to the Haringey Winter Night Shelter and Besom in Haringey.
