Thanks so much for all the emails, I have managed to reply to all this month! Thanks also to Cieran Downes who has become my “right hand” at the studio.

So let’s get to the point: what does it mean to be healthy and fit? To be able to run 50 miles? Bench press 120 Kg? The answer is NO. If you follow me on social media you will know that I have been only talking about one thing for the past few months and that’s my experience competing in the CrossFit Games (that officially crowns the fittest man & woman on Earth – and just for the record, I am glad to say that this 39 year old body is on the top 0.000001 % fittest people in the planet ;-)). Consequently, I have learnt to rethink what it means to be fit… And I couldn’t agree more with the CrossFit standards! Unfortunately it would make this a 10 page article to explain it all so I am going to give you a taste of what I consider the most important, and the cornerstone of this system. It’s the Sickness, Wellness & Fitness relationship.

world's fittest peopleNearly every measurable value of health can be placed on a continuum that ranges from sickness to wellness to fitness. From blood pressure, body fat, bone density, Triglycerides, good & bad cholesterol, flexibility, muscle mass and many other ‘hard numbers’ can give us a measurement that can put us on one of those three categories.

For example, a blood pressure of 160/95 is pathological, 120/70 is healthy, and 105/55 is consistent with an athlete’s blood pressure; a body fat of 40% is pathological, 20% is normal or healthy and 10% is fit. We observe a similar ordering for bone density, heart rate and dozens of other measures of health. Done right, fitness provides us with great protection against the ravages of time & disease.

CrossFitSo sickness, health & fitness are measures of the same entity. If your fitness regime doesn’t support health, it’s not right for you. I hope that this article lights the fire on you to kick start a great positive life change.
