Q&A with Last Day Sect

Q&A with last sect

What are you listening to right now?

Iggy Pop’s 1999 album ‘Avenue B’. It’s an unusually reflective and sedate album for Iggy. I haven’t heard it for a long time and something drew me to it today.

In terms of new music there is an exciting Belgian singer songwriter called Flo Sabeva who lives in London. I’m really enjoying her beautiful debut solo album ‘The London Sessions’.

It’s Karaoke night. What song do you sing?

My first choice – if they have it – is ‘Christmas Card From A Hooker in Minneapolis’ by the king of louche dystopian crooning, Tom Waits.

What have you been reading lately?

‘Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar’ by Simon Sebag Montefiore. It’s a horrible, terrifying, read in many places but also a ratre insight into his inner circle of family and friends.

Who is the most influential person in your life?

Without doubt my Dad, Waveney Wilcox, who as a musician and larger than life character inspired me to make music and to have fun.

Which song do you wish you had written?

I wish I’d written many songs but ‘I Melt With You’ by Modern English comes to mind today. Exquisite pop from my home town of Colchester.

We’re at the bar. What are you drinking?

Vodka martini with a twist of lemon please.

Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?

Cyril Smith

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A rock star, but I’ve long since settled for obscure cult status, at best!

If you were a London tube station, which one would you be?

Cockfosters.

Are you heading to London?

Last Day Sect are playing at The Water Rat, Gray’s Inn Road (near King’s Cross) on Thursday 7 June. This is the launch gig for our new single ‘The Witch House’ and it will feature several special guests.
