Having a plan in place will ensure you allocate resources effectively, help you promote and grow your business and differentiate yourself from your competitors. Whether you just want to compare notes or are in need of some guidance, here are my top 10 marketing tips for making your business rock in 2017.
- Know your audience
Create your ideal customer persona and then work out where to find them. They may be everywhere or just in a small place but once you know you can take steps to reach them.
- Have a budget
If you are opting for print advertising or someone to run your social media campaign work out how much you can afford.
Similarly, if you decide to do-it-yourself, work out how much time you can spare to design and print off your artwork, to distribute it and/or to pre-schedule your social media posts.
Whichever option you choose, whatever may happen, make sure you stick with it.
- Be consistent
Whether you like it or not advertising is necessary for 99.9% of businesses. You cannot get relevant statistics from too short a run. You don’t need to have the budget of Coca Cola to advertise but you do need to be consistent in order to ascertain what works and more importantly what doesn’t.
- It’s not you, it’s me
If you want Mrs Loadsamoney to buy, you need her to envision how she will be unable to survive without your product/service (well perhaps not that dramatic, but you get the gist?). Everything else is secondary. That’s why it’s important to remember your marketing should be formulated with the prospect in mind i.e. IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU, IT’S ABOUT THEM
- Get a website
Websites are affordable and your customers will expect you to have one so they can find out more about you. If you haven’t already done so, then get it sorted pronto. If your website is up and running, check it’s up to date.
- Make sure you’re mobile
With devices and their capabilities growing exponentially, being mobile-friendly has become the new game-changer and king-maker. Your customers will expect it, your competitors have most likely already done it and without it you will get lost in the crowd.
- Email marketing
This little beauty is often overlooked, but has so many upsides you should give it a chance. An organically grown email list allows you to build credibility, boost sales, strengthen relationships, reach people on any device, generate leads and ultimately add new clients.
- Check out the competition
Knowing who your competitors are and what they are offering enables you to make your products, services and marketing stand out from the crowd.
- Don’t be afraid to jump on a trend
Remember when Brad & Angelina split? Norwegian Airlines took the right approach – see their advert in the national papers!
- When the going gets tough, the tough keep going
We’ve all been there when there’s too much month at the end of the money and we’re scrabbling around for savings. Generally the marketing budget is the first thing to get the chop, but as tempting as it may be to do so it could prove fatal for your business. There are many ways to achieve savings but the marketing has to stay because without it how will anyone know about you?
