One man’s trash….….And all that treasure

“A local gem” – Customer Comment

“Really lovely staff and some real bargains!” – Customer R

“Most helpful and understanding people ever. Really appreciated the service” – Mrs A

Barnet Furniture Centre (BFC) was established in 2011 to help supply affordable, good quality furniture to low-income families and individuals in the Barnet area. Seven years on we now help households across London; covering Haringey, Enfield, Camden and Brent. At BFC we have always operated a two-tier pricing strategy, the lower price being for anyone receiving benefits (proof required). Our referral service allows those in need to receive one free delivery in order to turn their new property into a home.

Most of our sales are to ordinary retail customers who visit our small open warehouse in Queen’s Parade Close, N11. It’s been labelled as an Aladdin’s cave here you can come to find weird and wonderful antiquities and retro/ upcycled one-off pieces.

We also hold a stock of new and second-hand beds and mattresses which are competitively priced; otherwise, all the items we sell are donated by the wonderful local community.

We have a tiny professional managerial team, but like most charities, we rely largely on the help of our volunteers (we’re always on the lookout for more). Several of our volunteers have come to BFC via local back-to-work schemes; after being trained, some have stayed working part-time or even full-time for us, whilst a number have gained employment elsewhere.

Every year we in the UK throw away circa 350,000 tons of reusable furniture. To paint a clearer picture; that amount would furnish 70-80% of the households in the North London area (covering Barnet, Haringey, Enfield, Camden & Islington); sadly, the majority of that 350,000 tons is dumped into landfill.

Since 2011 BFC has recycled almost 850 tons of donated furniture and household items; which doesn’t sound as impressive as it should. Imagine driving from The Archway roundabout (N16) all the way through Highgate, Muswell Hill and onto Friern Barnet (N11); imagine a continuous terrace of 3-bed houses on both sides of the road, with all the furniture piled outside. That’s about 850 tons.

We are half way through our 7th year and feel it’s the right time to call out to our local community to ask you all to get behind your local reuse centre and help spread the word! We are in desperate need of donations, local advertising & support, volunteers, friends and trustees. If you have some time on your hands, then in addition to helping support a local charity you will find a good network of friends awaits you.

You can sign up to our ‘Friends of BFC’ list which will get you exclusive promotions, vouchers and advertising material. Our Friends are ambassadors of BFC and spreading the word amongst your colleagues, peers and family members will really make a difference to our little project!  For more information about Friends of BFC, volunteering or supporting us please email: info@barnetfurniturecentre.org or call on 020 8361 6802 /6310.

If you’re looking for a great bargain come to visit the centre at: 4 Queen’s Parade Close, Friern Barnet, N11 3FY.
