Homelessness is up 170% since 2010. The latest figures show that between autumn 2017 and January 2018 4,751 people are estimated to be sleeping rough on any one night. All People All Places are the umbrella charity for the Overnight Respite (previously called Winter Night Shelter) and we act as a host church for the scheme.
St James Church is one of the host venues for the All People All Places Enfield and Haringey Overnight Respites (previously called Winter Night Shelter). There are 17 churches and a synagogue that open their doors throughout the coldest months to offer an evening meal, bed and breakfast plus much more for the guests.
At St James, each night we open we are able to help 12 people to sleep in a warm place with a hot meal and in safety. The main aim of the scheme is that people will be rehoused throughout the period of the shelter so that we can then help more people.
Hannah Whitehead (Head of Community Ministries at St James Muswell Hill) is the coordinator at St James. There are various ways in which you can serve: cooking, setting up and helping on the evening team, staying awake and keeping watch on the night team, helping to cook with the breakfast team, clearing up or taking a bag of laundry home.
