Just in time for the start of the Easter holidays, The Muswell Hill Traders’ Group (MHTG) and the Mayor’s Outer London Fund present a few days of green-themed fun In Muswell Hill. The “Green Is Good In Muswell Hill” event has been designed to help showcase the eco and locally-sourced products on offer in Muswell Hill’s lovely, individual boutiques and to bring its historic shopping streets alive with a new local loyalty scheme, in-store offers and events, late night opening, food and drink tastings and family entertainment. The event will culminate in an action-packed Saturday with plenty of fun for all ages and free rickshaw rides around Muswell Hill. A “Secrets and Treasures In Muswell Hill” treasure trail phone app will also be launched to celebrate the event, revealing Muswell Hill’s history and uncovering local knowledge for both young and old. The “Green Is Good In Muswell Hill” event marks the work already done by local MHTG retailers in reducing their carbon footprints as part of a Low Carbon Zone government-funded project.

Buy eco locally and reduce your carbon footprint by walking to the shops

It is not just the big guns in retail who offer a range of eco products, our independent retailers do too, often offering a more exclusive collection with an especial ear-to-the-ground for local designers and producers. During the “Green Is Good In Muswell Hill” event, retailers will be showcasing their loveliest eco-friendly and locally-sourced products. Products on offer include picnic rugs from Cosi homewares made from re-woven wool, chic heels from Frocks Away made from recycled Kimonos and ethically-made baby clothes and biodegradable nappies from O Baby. To encourage MHTG retailers to show-off the best in local eco a ‘Green Window Competition’ is also set to be staged. Judging will be entirely in the hands of the Muswell Hill community with shoppers invited to log onto the new InMuswellHill.com website and vote for the best.

Encouraging local loyalty with exclusive offers and promotions

During the event, retailers within The MHTG will be launching the new “Shop ‘Til You Drop In Muswell Hill” bag for life. The bag will give its owner access to special offers at MHTG businesses when it is used. This is a non-profit exercise and in exchange for their bag, customers will be asked to make a donation (suggested donation of £2) to help fund The MHTG’s second, Christmas “Eat, Drink & Be Merry In Muswell Hill” shopping event in December 2012.

To be launched to coincide with the start of “Green is Good In Muswell Hill” the trail is designed for all ages and even includes some ‘what can you see’ clues little minds can work on. Once completed, entrants will be given the opportunity to submit their finished trail and be entered into a prize draw to win a diamond! The winner will be selected on The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Weekend.

Saturday 31st March will mark the culmination of The MHTG’s green event with green-themed entertainment, family fun and free rickshaw rides on offer throughout Muswell Hill. For more information about the launch of the treasure trail phone app and rickshaw rides please follow us on Facebook and Twitter, as above.

MHTG retailers and the Low Carbon Zone

The Low Carbon Zone is a government-funded project which aims to reduce carbon emissions in 10 London boroughs by 20% over a period of two years. The project aims to trial different approaches across domestic and commercial properties in areas which represent the different challenges presented in making the capital more environmentally friendly. Muswell Hill was selected to become part of the project due to its status as a conservation area and the particular difficulties presented by the area’s historic architecture. As part of the project, 40 small businesses in Muswell Hill have received an environmental audit with some reducing their energy use by as much as 30%. Twelve businesses have also replaced their halogen lights with LEDs, saving a total of £8,000 on energy bills and over 30 tonnes of CO2!

The MHTG has its own ethical code of practice and an environmental policy that all member businesses strive to adhere to. All retailers taking part in the “Green Is Good In Muswell Hill” will be displaying their particular environmental commitments outside or inside their businesses to help encourage the wider community.
