Secret history of the Northern Line! – 11th October, 7.45pm at Muswell Hill Methodist Church (28 Pages Lane)
The Northern Line – you love it, hate it, and love to hate it. But do you know about its secret history? Do you know where Muswell Hill station was, and what occupies the site today? If not (or even if you do) come along to our next event to find out! We are delighted to announce that Michael Burman will be revealing the secret history of the Northern Line at North Bank (Muswell Hill Methodist Church) at our next meeting on 11th October. Michael has 30 years’ experience teaching Geography, of which 16 has been spent as a Senior Deputy Head of one of London’s largest comprehensive schools. He is one of the longest-serving elected Fellows of the Royal Geographical Society. Everyone is welcome and there is no need to book in advance.
Muswell Hill Photography Competition
In celebration of MHFGA’s 70th birthday, we held a photography competition via Facebook titled ‘Views of Muswell Hill’. We shortlisted 6 entries and then asked for your votes in the form of ‘likes’. The winner with 315 votes was Maximilian Haslinger-Hutter, closely followed by Sarah Jane Palmer with 300 votes. Entries were of a very high standard and we would like to thank all those who took part. People are still ‘liking’ the entries! Congratulations to Maximilian, and to Sarah for being a very worthy runner-up. Maximilian will receive a 12×18 print of his winning entry, courtesy of Snappy Snaps.
New CPZ coming to Muswell Hill
For some time now Haringey Council has mulled over the option of introducing a CPZ at the southern end of Muswell Hill. After receiving positive feedback from residents in the affected roads, they have decided to go ahead. The affected area is Church Crescent, Muswell Hill Road from Planet Organic down to Woodside Avenue, plus Grand Avenue and the five residential roads which lead off it to the north. The CPZ will operate Mon-Fri, 11am-1pm.
Recently a group of Muswell Hill traders met with the MHFGA, MP Catherine West and a Council representative to voice concerns. They fear that that shoppers may be put off coming to Muswell Hill, and they would like the rules for obtaining business permits to be relaxed. Catherine and the Council representative have said they would follow these issues up and will report back to us.
New corporate members!
We are delighted that our corporate membership programme continues to go from strength to strength. Recent recruits include Barron Salon, Misk Boutique, Tatlers Estate Agents, Point5 Kitchens, Pure Nest Cafe, S&D Express and the Muswell Hillbilly Brewers. We are incredibly proud of our local independent businesses and of the hard work they do to make Muswell Hill such a wonderful place to live, shop and work.
MHFGA is your local residents’ association (since 1948!) We produce six bi-monthly Newsletters per year, which are distributed to over 750 members. Membership is just £10 a year and gives you the chance to attend our special events. Each summer we hold the popular ‘Odd One Out’ competition, and last Christmas we raised over £460 with our Charity Tombola.
