Muswell Hill’s New Square Set to be Named on 20th June

Midsummer Muswell

The transformation of the area surrounding the Muswell Hill Odeon has been long overdue. The new village square outside Planet Organic is just part of the revamp and even while the works continue around the back of the cinema, a newly formed group the Muswellites has seized the moment to shout about the new space.

Determined to make the square the focus of the community the Muswellites have planned a big opening event for 20th June. Called “Midsummer Muswell” the event will showcase the best of all things local including song, dance, a fashion show, pop-up arts and crafts stalls as well as food & drink. The event will also act as a fundraiser for WAVE (We Are all Valued Equally) at St James Church, an outreach programme for young adults with learning difficulties.

All the Muswellites have strong links with the community. Spokesperson Becky Beach said “Whether we live or run a business here all our focus is about community. Up until now Muswell Hill has not had a pivotal point allowing events to be staged. The new village square gives the area a place to meet friends, family and welcome visitors to the area. The Muswellites have joined hands and started the ball rolling. There’s no doubt that we have taken inspiration from other local events such as Fair in the Square and the Crouch End Festival; this is our first event as a collective and we have been lucky to learn from local events organised with great success by colleagues and friends, so we are confident of providing Muswell Hill with the start of a regular event that will nurture closer connections with the community.”

Becky mentioned “We have been running a competition in the area’s local magazines – the Muswell Flyer, Highgate Handbook and Crouch End Connection – to encourage the locals to come up with a moniker. The response has been overwhelming and we have a panel who will consider the entries. Once the name has been chosen, the winning entrant will have a bench dedicated to them in the new square.”

Deanna Bogdanovic from Bona Fide Studio continued “Our aim is to bring the community together, celebrate and recognise our unique character. And what better way is there than by giving our Muswell Hill the most amazing party with something for all.”

Live performances from local choirs, schools, musicians and dancers run throughout the day. Our compere will be the effervescent John Plews from Upstairs at the Gatehouse. Amongst the song and dance will be a Mr Muswell Hill competition and Zumba so make sure you are ready to cheer on contestants and shake your booty! And, Michelle Collins has also confirmed she will also be appearing on the main stage. The square will be lined with stallholders selling crafts, plants, clothes, books together with food and drink available from Victoria Stakes.

Across the way at St James Church we will have the “Mayor of Muswell Hill” who will preside over parachuting teddies and pets whilst inside the church there children can take part in Music Bugs, budding Elsa’s can let it go in a “Frozen” workshop, and those in need of some R&R can enjoy a sit down with tea & cake in the church grounds.

The Midsummer Muswell stage has been generously supported by Tatlers LLP Estate Agents; other sponsors include: Arc Veterinary Centre, Mr Jones, Kay & Kompany & Streathers Solicitors.

Midsummer Muswell has been organised by a group of local people but we also need around 50 volunteers to help out on the day with setting up and clearing away as well as stewarding, so if you can spare two hours on the day, please email [email protected] stating ‘Volunteers’ in the subject line.
