When you visit Villiers Terrace you will find it enchanting. The quirky, trendy interior belies the fact that the Villiers is surrounded by desirable outside space which includes a huge beer garden and a large decked terrace; it provides the ideal spot for watching Crouch End sunsets.
Steve Flaherty took over the Villiers late last year. In a previous life Steve was in music (a producer) and telecoms so this is a new venture and a new industry for him. But as a keen business man with plenty of nous and a passionate understanding of the pub world, PLUS having spent the best part of his life in Crouch End, this is not alien territory. Indeed Steve was a regular at the Princess Alexandria before it was renamed and rebranded as The Villiers Terrace so he’s come full circle.
Now what does Steve have in store for you lovely locals? Well for a start there is the strong partnership with Michelin star Chef Rob Pearce whose philosophy of keep it simple, keep it seasonal and use only the best ingredients ensures he delivers the finest flavours on your plate. Rob’s brings modern techniques and thinking to the creation of traditional British food. So, don’t be surprised to see dishes such as “Mutton dressed as lamb” or for the more adventurous, jellied conga eel with chilli vinegar as part of the regularly changing daily food specials.
The Sunday roasts are very popular with regular appearances of British game alongside the traditional meats. If you want you can order the new carving roast where the family’s meat is served whole with the carving and serving is done at the table by the family. Just like it was at home when we were kids! This of course is not obligatory, just one of their lovely quirks! (Booking is essential for Sunday lunch.)
During the week, there is plenty to do:
Tuesday is Quiz Night where teams are encouraged to come along, eat, drink and of course be smart!
The first Thursday of each month sees a Sommelier join the team to match fabulous wines to each course you order at dinner. A glass of fizz gets you in the mood followed by food matched with two wines for each course. It is all rounded off beautifully with a carefully selected dessert wine. This divine monthly indulgence is from £45 for the four courses, including the wine. I feel a celebration coming on!
With the glimpses of tantalising sunshine around let’s not forget that Villiers has fabulous outside space. The garden is an exclusive oasis and will be the place to make the most out of the British summer. For those eager to be outside don’t forget the street front deck terrace. Seating 30, it is the perfect spot to sit back and relax, away from the hustle and bustle of Crouch End.
If you are looking for a place to celebrate there is a secluded room which can be matched with canapés, buffets or a sit down dinner away from the madding crowds. The food can be matched with wines from a regularly updated comprehensive list which has a mostly European Flavour punctuated with a little New Worldness
To hear Steve and Rob banter it’s clear that they have a fundamental understanding of how each other works, what each other’s strengths are and it looks like a partnership set to endure. Steve is a family man, who has collated a team of individuals who are chosen for their personality, as well as individual talent – and despite being closed on Mondays to do necessary maintenance – this is only temporary and they WILL be open on Easter Monday. They are here to serve N8 and become a hub for all that is the world of good food at a fabulous pub!
