Last month we looked at self-limiting beliefs – what they are, how they can sabotage us, and the need to become aware of the disastrous effect they can have. This month local author and personal life-coach, Dave Robson, develops this theme by suggesting ways of choosing different beliefs that work to your advantage.
Believe it or not, you can choose your thoughts – and your beliefs. It’s easy once you know how, and it’s an art well worth learning because the effect on your life will be dramatic. Imagine the following:
You’re sitting upright facing forward. Ninety degrees to the left of your centreline is a green cushion and ninety degrees to the right of your centreline is a red cushion. You decide to look at the red cushion so you turn your head in that direction. Now what happens to the green cushion? It disappears! Now you decide to look at the green cushion so you turn your head the other way and now the red cushion disappears.
From this we deduce it’s virtually impossible to look both ways at once.
Now assume the green cushion represents a negative thought – for example “I’m not good enough,” and the red cushion represents a positive thought – such as “I produce excellence.” There is not enough room at the forefront of your mind to hold both thoughts at once, so which one will you choose to look at? Most people would choose the positive one, but you can only do that if you notice that you have a conscious choice and then deliberately focus on the positive one, while turning away from the negative. If you decide to blunder on behaving unconsciously, you have no control over which thoughts you choose.
So what can you do on a practical level to find out what thoughts or beliefs are running around in your unconscious. One of the most powerful coaching tools for revealing the contents of your unconscious mind is meditation.
There are many methods of meditation and I have tried lots of them. From this experience I have developed my own method. Unlike most others, my method deliberately does not give your mind something to focus on. Here’s the basic principle: If you want to know what’s going on in your mind, and to hear the still, small voice of your heart, you must sometimes be still and silent, and listen carefully.
Sit in a silent place in an upright position, alert but not tense, in silence. What you do then is absolutely nothing, except to take a metaphorical step back and become a witness to whatever comes up.
Most likely at first your mind will come up with thought after thought, so don’t expect to still your mind. Some of what comes up will be unpleasant or uncomfortable, so don’t expect it to be relaxing. It may or may not be.
This is a journey and you need to do it regularly to start reaping the rewards.
