Nicole Kidman is almost unrecognisable in director Karyn Kusama’s absorbing crime drama. Kidman is sensational as Erin Bell, a hardened detective and alcoholic who is looking for a killer in Los Angeles. Kusama’s piercing lens delivers a stark and altogether bleak L.A. that couples up perfectly to the slow but inevitable demise of Erin’s character as the case progresses. Kidman also really sells the broken family angle and her scenes with her estranged daughter Shelby (played impressively by Jade Pettyjohn) give the film an added emotional layer. It’s just a shame that the finale drags on for too long. But don’t let that stop you from witnessing one of the finest lead performances of Kidman’s already outstanding career.
