Film Review: Teen Spirit – 3.5/5

Film Review

Max Minghella writes and directs this music-infused movie that looks visually stunning throughout. It’s a curious film that clearly has a distinct style, and Minghella proves that he has a keen eye for directing. The plot starts off well too but soon turns into a by-the-numbers melodrama which was a shame. Violet (a stunning Elle Fanning) is a teenager looking to leave her dreary life behind and make it big as a singer. When an X-Factor styled TV show advertises for new applicants, she takes a leap of faith to show the world her natural talent, despite numerous obstacles. Fanning is superb, especially when she performs (including a great rendition of Robyn’s classic ‘Dancing on my Own’). Some interesting plot strands go begging, especially involving her unlikely and interesting mentor Vlad (Zlatko Buric), but on the whole Teen Spirit is still worth your time.
