An utter gem of a period comedy, with The Lobster & The Killing of a Sacred Deer mastermind Yorgos Lanthimos now turning his attention to 18th Century England. Queen Anne (a mesmeric Olivia Colman) is about to have her world turned upside down. Her confidante Lady Sarah (a razor-sharp Rachel Weisz) has the Queen’s ear – but only until Sarah’s cousin arrives at the Palace unexpectedly looking for work. Abigail (a heaven-sent Emma Stone) sees an opportunity to rise above her station, and so begins a hilarious battle of wills as Abigail grows ever closer to the Queen – much to Sarah’s dismay. Throw in wonderful support from Nicholas Hoult, Mark Gatiss and James Smith and you have the first must-see film of 2019. Outstanding.
