Film Review: The Mule – 5 stars

Film review

Home Entertainment Release of the month

Clint Eastwood channels Gran Torino in this sensational, edge-of-your-seat thriller based on a true story. Eastwood also directs The Mule and gives the film an assured visual style that enhances the tension at every given opportunity. A 90-year-old horticulturist and Korean War veteran, Earl Stone (Eastwood) is a workaholic and the life of the party, but that has come at the expense of his failed marriage and estrangement from his daughter. After he loses his business, Earl takes up an unlikely job as a driver for a Mexican cartel (led by Andy Garcia) looking to shift product across state lines. On his trail are DEA agents (Bradley Cooper, Michael Peña & Laurence Fishburne) looking to make a career-defining bust. There’s a brilliant streak of comedy running throughout the film, with the magnetic Eastwood once again proving that he is a master of storytelling, both in-front of and behind the camera. Simply unmissable.
