Fortismere Community Brass

fortismere community brass band

brass bandEver seen a brass band out carolling and wanted to stay longer?  Enjoyed the film ‘’Brassed Off’’ and fancied a toot?  Now’s your opportunity!

brass bandA group of local brass players have started a new band, Fortismere Community Brass, based at Fortismere School Music Centre.  Enthusiastic learners and more experienced players are all welcome. From secondary school age to retirement age, the only requirement is grade 1 standard (you don’t need to have taken the exam) on a brass instrument. Indeed,  if you already read music and play another instrument, you’ll probably find a brass instrument that you can quickly progress on. Some instruments are available for temporary loan and hire so if you’re a pianist who’s ever hankered for a blast on a tuba, now’s your chance! Full percussion is provided.

fortismere community brass bandBand rehearsals run on Friday evenings 7.30 – 9.30 pm in Fortismere Music Centre (entrance through the school gates on Tetherdown) and there is no charge for school age children. We play a diverse repertoire including all those traditional brass band favourites, band arrangements of light classical and popular pieces (Bohemian Rhapsody for brass band anyone?) and  film scores (Pirates of the Caribbean and James Bond  are current favourites). For those of you who might need some extra support to get started, we’re hoping to start a training band prior to the main band rehearsal.

The band was a big hit at the East Finchley Christmas Festival last December and will be returning to local stages throughout the Summer – including guest spots at the Festivals in Crouch End (June 16) and East Finchley (June 23) so come along and see what we’re brass bandall about. We’re a friendly bunch, and keen to be involved in our local area. At the time of writing we are planning to be the first brass band to play The Grove at Alexandra Palace for 60 years! If you miss us in June, we’ll be playing at the Fortismere ‘Fortitude’ Festival in July and at Victoria Park in August. We are aiming to provide a quality, community-focused not-for-profit traditional brass band for the local community in Muswell Hill, East Finchley, Crouch End, Alexandra Palace and the surrounding area. We’re also available to hire for private or commercial events so if you feel we’d enhance your birthday party (and not annoy the neighbours too much) just give us a call.

All our details and a list of upcoming events can be found on our band website www.fortismerecommunitybrass.org.uk or telephone our Chairman Craig Boulton on 07588 868600 or by email to [email protected]. You can also get details of our band from the Fortismere Music Centre ([email protected])
