Q&A Permanent Smilers

The Permenant Smilers

What are you listening to right now?

The last album I listened to was The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn by Pink Floyd. I’m really into Syd Barrett.

How did you get into music?

Apparently I was singing along to Dionne Warwick at 6 months old. Not the words obviously… My uncle, and dad to a lesser extent were into jazz and my mother’s side of the family had some classical training. Although the house wasn’t exactly filled with music, it was kind of in my blood I suppose.

Who do you follow religiously on Twitter?

I’m not a fan of the celebrity culture. I don’t have a twitter account.

What have you been reading lately?

I buy books intending to read them but then never seem to have the time. The last book I bought was John Cleese’ autobiography.

Who is the most influential person in your life?

My family, and friends are supportive and objective with what I’m doing musically. Musical influences are many and varied. I grew up listening to Bad Manners, Captain Sensible, The Stranglers, but I’m a firm believer that most music is capable of seeping into your subconscious, especially when you’re growing up. I was in a pub the other day and they were playing The Detroit Spinners and Kelly Marie. It was a good feeling to hear that sort of stuff again, though it’s a million miles from what I do. Or is it?

Which song do you wish you had written?

Gershwin’s Summertime. There’s so much you can do with that song even after so much having been done with it. There are others too… Golden Brown, Stop The Cavalry. I could go on.

We’re at the bar. What are you drinking?

I’ll have a porter if there’s one on, please. If I’m done with porter then Sambuca will see me home nicely.

Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?

What did you want to be when you grew up?

What are you looking forward to in 2015?

I’ve spent the last 18 months or so writing and recording an album which I’m excited to get out there.

What gigs, songs or albums are you promoting at the moment?

I have a Christmas song called ‘My Mojo’s Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ which has had a low key release this year due to a few technical hiccups. Next year it’ll get a proper release, hopefully on limited edition vinyl.

How can we find out more about you?

The website www.thepermanentsmilers.com should carry the latest news. I can always be contacted through the website, and if people take the trouble to write to me, I always try to find the time to write back. Then there’s The Permanent Smilers facebook account which I need to get up to speed with.
