Q&A with Gillian Glover
What are you listening to right now?
Lianne La Havas. Rival Sons. I have two small children and my husband (and bass player) and I love exposing them to all sorts of music, watching videos, talking about what they hear. I am currently keeping at least one Beatles album in the car at any given point. Their musical education must include a comprehensive knowledge of The Beatles.
How did you get into music?
There was never a point where I got into it. It has always been there. On asking someone once what music they liked, they replied that they didn’t really like music. WHAT?? Everyone likes something! In my case, I love and appreciate a vast of array music and always will do. I am dubious of people who say they like nothing.
As for actually playing and writing, that did come much later. I did not sing in front of anyone else until I was 21. What a revelation that it could be so much fun!
Who do you follow religiously on Twitter?
I’m not addicted to Twitter and follow no one religiously. But I like to read what Lauren Laverne has to say and if I’m hungry I’ll have a gander at what Ottolenghi is up to.
What have you been reading lately?
I will sheepishly admit that I find little time to read these days, what with the small people in my life. I love to read when I’m on the bus or train BUT I am cycling everywhere at the moment. Just finished the stupendous work, The Goldfinch, not long ago.
Who is the most influential person in your life?
My Dad. He is also a musician and a wise, humble, patient and generous man. What I love and admire about him most is that he is never idle. He is always writing music, writing a book, reading a book, painting. Life is too short not to be making the most of it, deriving inspiration from what’s around you and feeding it into your art.
Which song do you wish you had written?
Bohemian Rhapsody – not another song like it in the history of the world! Crazy genius.
We’re at the bar. What are you drinking?
A friend has just introduced me to the Porn Star Martini. Awful name. Amazing drink. Passion fruit martini with a shot of champagne on the side. Yum.
Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A painter, a singer, a travel writer or a marine biologist. I have been lucky enough to dabble in all these realms a little.
If you could change one thing about London, what would it be?
Crazy foreign investment in property here to either sit on or build luxury flats. How can this be allowed to happen on such a large, unprecedented scale and exacerbate the housing issues we already have?
What gigs, songs or albums are you promoting at the moment?
I am releasing a single, Fitful Night, on 24 September. We have a gig at The Macbeth in Shoreditch that evening. Also before then, we are playing on 20 August at 93 Feet East, also in Shoreditch. My latest album, Still Life With Music is available on iTunes.
