Q&A with Lanre

LanreWhat are you listening to right now?

Foy Vance – Hope | Karl Nova – Delayed But Not Denied | Broken Boat – Peace And Quiet | Ayo-Dele – Forever Becoming | Ethemia – Quirk Of Fate

How did you get into music?

I’ve always been around music – sang in my church choir for years… singing in the choir led me to being part of a UK collective; GK REAL and that experience took me touring with the band for a few years. I would say I began the process of finding my voice when I started to learn to play the guitar about three and a half years ago. It helped me to express the stories I wanted to tell with freedom.

Who do you follow religiously on Twitter?

I follow a few people for different reasons but I like Josh Osho, Karl Nova, David McQueen, Seun Kuti, Bangs and a Bun between them I get my daily dose of challenging debate and expressions and sometimes belly laughs.

What have you been reading lately?

I’m currently reading two books – There Was A Country by Chinua Achebe and A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving.

Who is the most influential person in your life?

My family has different levels of influence in my life… my dad has a special place.

Which song do you wish you had written?

Oh my days! Loads… Bibanke by Asa, Good Man by India Arie, Follow You Down to the Red Oak Tree by James McMorrow

Does God exist?

I have no logical explanation (and why should I?) as to why, where and how but I believe in God.

We’re at the bar. What are you drinking?

Something sweeter than water with 0% alcohol

Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?

A pregnant woman that goes into labour!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I thought I wanted to be a doctor because it was the thing to say when I was young. The idea of being able to help people get better appealed to me, then I realised I didn’t like the sight of blood or needles and don’t fancy looking at other people’s body parts and do not like the smell of hospitals so the idea fizzled hehe!

What song will you have played at your funeral?

If I die before I get to write one, then it would have to be something moody and beautiful like “Dogwood Blossom” by Fionn Regan to start with then something happy and cheery afterwards.

What gigs, songs or albums are you promoting at the moment?

My debut album is called “Pen Voyage Chapter 1; Singing for Change”
