Q&A with Marsha Swanson

What are you listening to right now?

I have a six year old daughter, so “Let It Go” from “Frozen” is never far away!

How did you get into music?

We had a piano in our house and I would often gravitate towards it at moments when I was on my own. I’d play around until I found notes that sounded right. Normally a melody line or a lyric would start from there. I also watched a lot of musicals. Like it or not, I’m sure the film “Grease” kick-started a lot of singing practice for me!

Who do you follow religiously on Twitter?

I can see how who you follow on twitter could tell you a lot about a person. Seeing as I don’t follow anyone, I suppose that might also tell you something about me!

What have you been reading lately?

“Checker and the Derailleurs” by Lionel Shriver! I was a fan of her “Orange Prize” winning novel “We need to talk about Kevin” and have steadily been reading her other work ever since. My new single came about from reading this book!

Which song do you wish you had written?

“Life on Mars” by David Bowie…..song writing to perfection!

We’re at the bar. What are you drinking?

A nice cup of tea. Who said “Rock n Roll” is dead!

Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?

Anyone with claustrophobia

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A magician. I think I missed a trick there!

If you could change anything about London, what would it be?

I’d love parking to be easier. Unfortunately, it is easy to find things that need changing but not so easy to find solutions!

What gigs, songs or albums are you promoting at the moment?

My new single “You Think I’m So Great I’m Not”. This song is very different to my previous releases as the music was written to accompany the lyrics of fictional band “Checker and the Derailleurs” by Lionel Shriver. I ordered the book from the U.S. as it wasn’t then available yet in the U.K. I was struck by Lionel’s comment in the afterword which stated “As for the song lyrics, I had an absolute blast writing them, and if anyone is ever inspired to set them to music, they’re welcome to give it a try”. Indeed I did and I was delighted when Lionel said that it was exactly as she heard it in her head! The book and the song are now available in the U.K!
