Q&A With Patrick Plunkett
What are you listening to right now?
Right now I’m listening to a lot of Bruce Springsteen and a fairly new folk rock band called Dawes.
How did you get into music?
I’m not sure if there was an exact moment when it kicked off. When I was a kid I lived in the West of Ireland with my family. There were a lot of music sessions out there so I was always surrounded by great musicians and people enthusiastic about music. When I was a teenager we moved to Dublin and I started playing in a band. I gave them a song I wrote to play. Once I’d heard my own song being played back to me by other musicians I was hooked. I knew this was something I wanted to do more of.
Who do you follow religiously on Twitter?
Hmmm… @sentricmusic is pretty good for music advice and a few laughs. I also follow any cool musicians I know – @AntonioLulic or @andrewmorris. Also, if anyone that gets in touch with me on Twitter I make sure I get back.. so I’ll follow them too
What have you been reading lately?
I just finished ‘The Art of Happiness’ which is a series of teachings or ideas from the Dalai Lama. Now I’m reading ‘Mr Penumbra’s 24 hour bookshop’ which is a bit more light hearted. It’s about a 24 hour bookshop with strange nocturnal visitors.
Who is the most influential person in your life?
There’s so many it would be hard to say. The person with the most influence on my songwriting at the moment is probably Josh Ritter. I would put him right up there with songwriting greats like Paul Simon or Bob Dylan but I’m not sure he’s that well known over here
Which song do you wish you had written?
David Bowie’s ‘Life On Mars’
Does God exist?
If you believe, he exists
We’re at the bar. What are you drinking?
A pint of Guinness, of course
Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?
Anyone in the cast of ‘Devil’ – it’s a Horror movie where people get stuck in a lift. In fact anyone from a Horror movie would be pretty scary.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A pirate, an astronaut and then a musician
What are you looking forward to in 2014?
I’m looking forward to releasing my new single ‘MTV Dream’
What gigs, songs or albums are you promoting at the moment?
I’m releasing a new single ‘MTV Dream’ on 24th Feb. There’ll be gig at The Troubadour in London on 28th Feb to kick it off! I’m really psyched about it. It took a lot of hard work to find the right people to work on it with but I feel like I got the right people in the end. I managed to get a great producer who has worked with Rae Morris, Kristina Train and Superfood and some great musicians (one of whom is from the Neil Cowley Trio)
How can we find out more about you?
I’m on Twitter, YouTube and Facebook but the best place to start finding out about me is my website – www.patrickplunkett.co.uk
