music reviews

A heady soaring mix of acoustic folk kissed by a modern twist that would not sound out of place on the Radio 1 playlist. Already supported by BBC 6 Music this award winning songwriter is certainly one to watch for in 2017 with his beautiful blend of music that takes you to the spiritual place we all go to find calm and perspective in our busy lives. Stunningly beautiful.

DELTA HOWL – Reach the Shore

The Black Country duo of Grant Ashman and Mark Neat really have delivered something o mainstream beauty. Taking the best in folk tinged music and added a dash o full on Springsteen rock with a powerful vocal. This may be a tried and tested formula but the emotion and quality of the track means Delta Howl are a band who rise above the masses and they do it splendidly.

FILTHY TONGUES – Holy Brothers

This track is of epic proportions. It’s like taking a wrong turn in Edinburgh and finding yourself in the musical equivalent o Gotham City, with every low life wanting a piece of you.

The dark, dripping vocals of Martin Metcalfe are the perfect front to this musical masterpiece and with the band supporting the Skids this summer, they show now signs of putting their slippers on yet and for that we should rejoice.

INDALO MAN – Te Quiero Mucho

Te Quiero Mucho is this summers Living Lavida! A summer radio smash performed and co-written by Gary Martin with Kevin Healy. Gary is the voice over man supreme. That may all be behind him soon if this track is anything to go by. It’s a song to make you smile, move and enjoy those long hot summers we have in the UK! Pop music at it’s finest. Hawian shirts all round!

MATINEE – Goldfish

Goldfish is a song is about a dysfunctional relationship between a girl and a boy. Recorded by electronic producer Julian Corrie, the single promises much and delivers in musical spades. This indie our piece have mastered their own sound of indie pop. In a field occupied by hundreds of acts, Matinee manage to look good, sound good and leave their own ear worm choruses in your head. Indie pop of the very highest quality.

PAOLO MORENA – Treasure in the Trash

Treasure in the Trash is a stripped back acoustic track from the norm that is Paolo but boy what a track.  A thought provoking masterpiece that leaves you questioning the world today and not in a dark depressing way. Paolo has a knack of delivering a song about the most serious of subjects but making you see the good in it. Yes he acknowledges the wrongs of the world but he also acknowledges the right and he makes you want to change, he makes you want to go out there and do.

The haunting trumpet on the track and laid back vocals of Richard Lemongrower make you think of wistful summers gone by. Like hearing Waterloo Sunset, Ghosts transports you to a place that delivers images of children playing on streets and watching workers come and go. Not sure why it does that as it’s not a song about reflecting on times gone by, it’s simply the music that makes you think of films such as Kes and other classics and also feels grittily northern.
