The Music Connection – Kirsty’s Piano Singalong

Kirsty's singalong

Hello everyone and thank you for taking the time to read the latest edition of ‘The Music Connection‘ column, for the Crouch End Connection magazine.

For this edition, I decided to write a review on an event I recently attended in Crouch End, which is called the “Kirsty Poptastic Piano Singalong”.

After going out for dinner at a local restaurant, I headed over to the Kings Head pub in Crouch End. Unbeknown to me at the time, the “Kirsty Poptastic Piano Singalong” was happening in the downstairs area of the pub. When I got there I decided to sit at a table in a dark corner of the room, to watch and find out more.

The “Kirsty Poptastic Piano Singalong” is a fortnightly event. Members of the audience are invited to choose the song they would like Kirsty to play on the piano. The audience can choose from a huge collection of songs Kirstie has. Alternatively, they can request songs on the night and if Kirsty knows the tune, she’ll play it.

In essence, this is “Live Piano Karaoke” with the lyrics for the songs are displayed on a big screen allowing the audience to sing along.  Prizes are also awarded to the best performers, as voted by the audience members.

On the night I attended, the audience were treated to some great tracks, which included “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen, “Wuthering Heights” by Kate Bush, “Ultravox” by Visage, “I Love Rock n’ Roll” by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and “Valerie” by the Zutons. Some audience members were brave enough to sing songs on the guest microphone, with accompaniment from Kirsty on the piano, together with the equally talented violinist, Heather Newton.

The event was hugely enjoyable, with each member of the audience positively embracing and participating in it.

Kirsty’s Poptastic Piano Singalong” was created by award winning performer Kirsty Newton, who is a veteran on the musical comedy scene, having toured with award winning comedians, including Rich Hall, Mitch Benn and Phil Nichol.

Kirsty’s official website is at www.kirstynewton.com where you will read about other projects Kirsty is currently involved in, as well as her past performing credits.

I really recommend going along to a “Kirsty Poptastic Piano Singalong” event soon, which is held every fortnight, downstairs at the Kings Head Pub in Crouch End. I can guarantee that you’ll have a brilliant time whether you join in or just spectate!

Thank you for reading this month’s edition; catch you all soon.
